Candide
Wednesday 31 October 2018
Edvard Grieg Choir participates in Bergen National Opera's production of Bernstein's Candide .
The British actor Kevin Whately, known as Detective Inspector Lewis from television, gathers all threads and asides as the narrator in this comic operetta. Whately is surrounded by a total of 12 soloists, who juggle between even more roles. Among others, we can experience Randi Stene as the stubborn Old Lady in the tango "I am easily assimilated" and the young South African soprano Vuvu Mpofu as Conegunde in the coloratura "Glitter and be gay" - together with an international star team of singers.
Candide is based on the 18th-century French novel "Candide or Optimism" by Voltaire, which is a satirical response to the German philosopher Leibniz's thesis that people live "in the best of all possible worlds".
