On the occasion of the Reformation Jubilee in Bergen 3.-7. March, the Bergen Cathedral Choir, baroque orchestra and soloists from Edvard Grieg perform Bach's cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott , during the service in Bergen Cathedral.
The cantata was composed by Bach for Reformation Day, which is celebrated annually on 31 October in the Lutheran church. On this day in 1517, Martin Luther sent his 95 Theses in a letter to Albert of Brandenburg, the Archbishop of Mainz. The cantata is one of Bach's most famous cantatas, and is one of two cantatas he composed for Reformation Day.
Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is written for three trumpets, timpani, two oboes, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, organ continuo, four vocal soloists and four-part choir.
