Othello

Monday 11 December 2017

Performances 11/12, 13/12 and 15/12. At 19:00.

Edvard Grieg Choir participates when Bergen National Opera and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra present Otello by Giuseppe Verdi, a powerful drama about jealousy and love, with outstanding singers in the leading roles.

With storm, lightning and thunder, we are thrown into the famous tragedy and are led further through the human wanderings where fierce vocal performances surprise us from act to act.

Otello defends the Cypriots against Turkish invasion. Iago is ambitious, manipulative and cruel. Desdemona, Othello's wife, is portrayed as unfaithful. A complex story of innuendo and false evidence leads to a terrible tragedy for all three.

The opera is based on Shakespeare's famous play. Music and drama are closely linked in a web of alternating emotional outbursts. The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra is on stage as the drama unfolds around them in perhaps the strongest of all Verdi's operas.

Outstanding singers such as Stuart Skelton, Latonia Moore and Lester Lynch are returning to Bergen.
