Actus Tragicus
When JS Bach applied for a job as a cantor in Blasiuskirche in Mühlhausen as a twenty-two-year-old in 1707, he wrote in quick succession two of the cantatas that will be presented at this concert: Christ lag in Todesbanden (BWV 4), a dramatic interpretation of Luther's great hymn that describes Jesus death and resurrection, and Gottes Zeit ist die allebeste Zeit (BWV 106), a work for funerals, also known as "Actus Tragicus". In addition, Herr Jesu Christ wahr' Mensch und Gott (BWV 127), composed in Leipzig for Lent Sunday in 1725, will be performed. Here Bach quotes his own Matthew Passion.
Edvard Grieg Kor joins forces with the orchestra Barokkanerne from Oslo. The concert is led by Paul Agnew, who is an internationally recognized conductor, and an outstanding interpreter of baroque and pre-classical repertoire.
