Brahmsfest: A German Requiem
Sunday 30 September 2018
Johannes Brahms deserves a party. His works are regular features on the concert program both here in Bergen and around the world. The public likes the music of this serious and perfectionist composer. At the party's four concerts, you will hear two symphonies, a violin concerto, a piano concerto, chamber music and finally his German Requiem.
The party ends with another highlight – Ein deutsches Requiem. Brahms was 31 years old when he began his requiem in 1865. He was mourning the loss of his mother. Brahms did not use the Latin text that was common in funeral Masses, but chose it himself from Luther's German-language Bible. The work was an immediate success, marked Brahms's breakthrough and hits us right in the heart.
